Federal Enforcement Launch Immigration Sweep in the City of Charlotte
Immigration officers have descended on Charlotte as part of President Donald Trump's expanding operation on unauthorized immigration, according to official statements.
The initiative, dubbed "Operation Charlotte's Web", was announced on the weekend, with representatives stating that "undocumented criminals" would be primary subjects in the metropolitan region.
"We are surging DHS law enforcement to the city to maintain public safety and public safety threats are removed," an official representative announced.
Municipal leaders, including the city's chief executive, released a joint statement opposing the initiative, saying it was causing "unnecessary fear and uncertainty" in the local population.
Enforcement Measures
Military-style vehicles and special operations teams could be participating in the Charlotte area operation, according to internal government documents.
Multiple congregants doing yard work at a eastern Charlotte church retreated to wooded areas when authorities descended, with one man being detained, according to reports.
"We thought church was safe and nothing [was] gonna happen," a teenage observer stated to media.
Political Context
Since the administration's continuation, national forces have been deployed to various urban centers including Washington DC, Los Angeles and Chicago to deliver on the pledge of "the largest deportation programme" in US history.
The federal agency said they are implementing the operation because North Carolina has not complied with the around 1,400 Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees, meaning they had been freed due to "sanctuary policies".
Municipal Classification
Charlotte is not a sanctuary city - cities that have policies in place to restrict cooperation given to government enforcement - but it is a "designated immigrant-friendly municipality". This is a recognized status for municipalities that are dedicated to immigration inclusion.
"The administration and its leadership will act to safeguard Americans when local officials won't," representatives declared.
Community Profile
Charlotte is an demographically mixed municipality, with about seventeen percent of population being born outside of the country, according to demographic data.
Federal authorities has not revealed how long the raids will continue. Chicago's crackdown, which began in September is continuing.
Leadership Commentary
Earlier in the week, Congresswoman Alma Adams said she was made aware of the campaign and was "extremely concerned" about federal officers coming to this region.
The subsequent location on Trump's list is set to be New Orleans, according to sources, and that as many as 200 agents could be deployed to the area.
Operations in other municipalities like large metropolitan areas have received backlash over allegations of overly aggressive tactics.
