British Foreign Office has included an additional eleven more destinations to its public advisory roster about the dangers of methanol toxicity from tainted beverages.

The revised warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the incidence of documented incidents" of methanol contamination.

Only last month, officials had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, following several high-profile incidents like the fatal demise of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being cautions that even small amounts of industrial alcohol can lead to blindness or death within 12–48 hours.

"If something feels off, such as a headache that's far more intense than typical or sight issues – contact a doctor fast."
