United Nations Lifts Penalties on President of Syria Prior to White House Visit
United Nations Security Council members voted in favour to an American proposal to lift sanctions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria before his presidential meeting the following week.
He became transitional president after leading an insurgent campaign that drove out Bashar al-Assad in the final month of 2024, concluding over a decade of domestic strife.
America's diplomat Mike Waltz at the United Nations declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that recognised Syria was in "a new era" following Assad's ouster.
Sharaa was under UN sanctions while commanding the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), previously associated with the extremist organization. Washington eliminated HTS from a list of foreign terror groups this past July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
The UN also removed penalties against the Syrian interior official Anas Khattab.
The nation's top diplomat welcomed the removal of these restrictions, stating online: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and supportive states for their support the country and its population."
Forthcoming Presidential Visit
Sharaa's White House visit on Monday follows American leader Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa had made "good progress" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.
Both presidents held discussions initially during May, during Trump's Riyadh trip while traveling through the Middle East.
Subsequent to that discussion, the US president described the Syrian as a "strong individual" possessing a "powerful background".
His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch within Syria until he severed ties during 2016.
Prior United States Journey
The upcoming meeting will not be Sharaa's first trip to the US during this period. This past fall, he emerged as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to address the United Nations gathering at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.
In his speech, he said Syria was "regaining its deserved status within the global community" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
