Unmasking Venezuelan Celebration Footage and AI-Generated Pictures of Nicolás Maduro.
Synthetic images claiming to portray Venezuela's president in custody after his apprehension by the American authorities have amassed countless of views across the internet.
How AI Images of Maduro Emerged Rapidly
The first inauthentic AI image seemingly showing him being escorted off a aircraft circulated shortly after. This image was absent from any official US channels; it was instead published on X by an account purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
Verification involved Google’s SynthID, confirming the picture was created or altered with AI tools.
Additional AI-generated visuals were disseminated in the following hours, seemingly depicting more angles of Maduro under guard. Noticeable identifying marks on these pictures reveal they were posted by an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
AI analysis says the further pictures were similarly generated or edited Google AI.
Real Photo Released but Fakes Persisted
Donald Trump released the first real photo of Maduro in handcuffs aboard the US Navy ship on Saturday morning. But even after this confirmation was published, AI-generated images continued to spread but were updated to incorporate the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.
Online investigation indicate these altered fabrications were initially shared on the video platform by a graphic design profile. Again, SynthID says the new graphics were generated or edited generative artificial intelligence.
Key Points:
- AI-generated content spread rapidly after the events of Maduro's capture.
- The first fake picture was shared on the same day on platform X.
- Tools like Google’s SynthID were used to verify the pictures as AI-generated.
- Fabrications continued to circulate and evolve despite the publication of real images.
- The source of many fabricated images was linked to social media accounts focused on graphic design.
